Confirm authority and scope first
Before removal, confirm that you have the legal authority to dispose of the contents. Tenant property, eviction-related materials, and disputed belongings should not be removed until the proper process is complete.
Once authority is clear, identify fixtures, appliances, maintenance supplies, keys, records, and anything else that must stay with the property.
- Post-move household contents
- Furniture and mattresses
- Boxes, bagged material, and ordinary clutter
- Accessible storage and garage contents
- Items approved for removal during turnover
Coordinate access around the building
For apartments and multi-unit properties, reserve elevators or loading areas if needed and share building access rules before the appointment. A long carry or limited parking can change the labor plan.
If cleaners, contractors, or inspectors are scheduled, avoid stacking crews in the same space. Cleanout work should happen before final cleaning and after any required documentation is complete.
Document the handoff
Use a short room list and photos to record what is included. Walk the property after removal so any remaining items or excluded areas are clear before the crew leaves.
For municipal disposal decisions, remember that contractors are responsible for waste they create. Brooklyn’s published rules distinguish contractor debris from resident special pickup.
